Investing in Advanced Manufacturing Technology and Operational Autonomy

Roeslein & Associates recently invested $2 million in automated machinery and systems for its modular fabrication facility in Red Bud, IL. These investments have increased Roeslein’s manufacturing efficiency and furthered its push for lean processes. With these investments came the purchase of a Voortman V808 Thermal Cutting Machine. The Voortman V808 allows enormous freedom to design and produce structures with the most complex connections and copes, while also significantly increasing production speed.

Production using the Voortman V808 started on October 2nd for both P&E and D&I projects. Roeslein currently has two operators specialized for this machine with plans to increase that number to as many as four.

Chris Hutson, Director of Manufacturing and Life Cycle Support, commented “Our continued investment in advanced manufacturing technologies and operational autonomy is consistent with our growth model. Roeslein’s new beam line anchored by the Voortman V808 and integral structural modeling software has quickly delivered increased capacity, quality, and capability to support our customers’ requirements for customizable and reliable solutions. The project design parameters of enhancing our stellar safety record and environmental goals has been accomplished by automating the handling of heavy structural members up to 40’ lengths aided by a fully enclosed thermal cutting fume extraction system.”

The Voortman V808 has the versatility of five different machines; it can mark, shear, punch, saw, drill, cut and mill square tubes, rectangular tubes, I-Beams, H-Beams, Channels, Flat Bars, and angle irons. This flexibility is due to integrating these multiple operations into an 8-axis robotic plasma machining center with automated 3-zone transfer discharge and modular expansion capability.

In August of this year, Roeslein installed and began production on its new Bystronic Fiber Laser Cutting Table. The Fiber Laser Cutting Table allows additional sheet and plate work to be completed in-house rather than outsourced, therefore giving Roeslein more control of its quality and schedule.

Roeslein will be installing a Watts Pipe Cutting System in January. The W-244 Computer-controlled pipe cutting machine conveys and rotates pipe from 2" to 24" OD with a 20'-50' machine bed capable of supporting 500 lbs. per foot to a maximum of 20,000 lbs.
